Through photography and video, Val Wens’ practice is an exploration of the complexities of identity within a contemporary visual arts context. Especially, in the investigation on traditional Javanese stage performance genres such as Wayang Orang (based on Hindu epics), Kethoprak (based on Javanese histories and romances) and Ludruk (based on re- telling the life stories of everyday people and their mostly comedic struggles.)

The work is to promote an active dialogue between traditional Javanese stage performance characters and contemporary, urban street life. It functions as performance documentation in personalizing the characters, both in terms of aesthetics and gesture. Furthermore it will translate the philosophical, politic and poetic content of these traditional Javanese epic stories through the genre of contemporary self-portraiture.
